Toyota is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi, Japan. It was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda in 1937. Toyota has become the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, now producing over 10 million vehicles per year. After World War II, Toyota benefited from Japan's alliance with the United States to learn from American automakers which transformed the small company into a leader in the automotive industry. Vehicles were originally sold under the name "Toyoda”, from the family name of the company's founder.
In 1950, the Korean War created demand for a military light utility vehicle. The United States government ordered 100 vehicles with the then-new Willys specifications and tasked Toyota to manufacture them. The Toyota "Jeep" BJ prototype was developed in January 1951. This came from the demand for military-type utility vehicles, much like the British Land Rover Series 1 that was developed in 1948.

Production of the first generation of the Land Cruiser began in 1951. The Toyota Landcruiser is one of the most durable 4-wheel drive vehicles even manufactured which explains why there are still so many around. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis body styles. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity have led to huge popularity, especially in Australia, where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle.

In 1965 Toyota decided they needed a Halo car like Mercedes had with the 300SL, BMW with their 507, Jaguar with the E-Type, Chevrolet with their Corvette and Porsche with the 911. The Toyota 2000GT was first displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965, production was between 1967 and 1970. Although only 337 cars were produced, it revolutionized the automotive world's view of Japan, then viewed as a producer of boring but practical cars. As a sleek, high-performance fastback coupé, it demonstrated that Toyota could rival the best sports cars of the sixties. Today, the 2000GT is seen as the first seriously collectible Japanese car and is sold for very high prices at auctions.

To follow up the 2000GT the Toyota Celica was introduced. It was produced from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial.
Body styles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés with the liftback having some design similarities to the Ford Mustang Fastback. The later models Celica became successful in rally sport and eventually spawned the next Japanese supercar, the Supra.
